RESULTS Fig. 2. Seasonal occurrence of the rural form of cutaneous leishmaniosis (CL) in the province of Balkh between 1990 and 1994 In 19901994 we recorded 8410 positive cases of CL from in and around Mazare-Sharif. Of the total number of positives, 6833 cases (81.25%) were detected as Leishmania major (rural form), 1566 cases (18.62 %) as Leishmania tropica (urban form) and 11 (0.13 %) cases as lupoid form (Fig. 1). Figures 2 and 3 show the seasonal occurrence of cutaneous leishmaniosis in the Province of Balkh in 1990-1994. The height of the white columns is the mean value plus standard deviation plus an average from the 5 years (1990-1994) and the black ones represent the mean value only. The age distribution of CL is shown in Fig. 4. We also divided the patients according to sex. Of the total of 8410 cases, 4549 (54%) were female and 3861 (46%) male. The difference in the occurrence of CL between the two sexes is only 8%, which we do not consider significant. Except for the above-mentioned positive cases from the province of Balkh, in October 1993 we also recorded 600 positive cases of CL caused by L. major in the district of Hiratan. In the same year, in the Tajic refugee camp in the town of Mazar-e-Sharif 260 positive cases of rural form were recorded. In 1994 609 positive cases (urban and rural forms) were identified in the Kabul refugee camp in Mazar-e-Sharif. In the Tajfc camp located in Dorayi Hiratan (Samangan province), 701 positive cases of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniosis were recorded. During these years we received data about positive cases of CL (rural form) from our units in the provinces of Faryab (330), Jawzj an (289), Samangan (175) and Sare Pool (161 cases). The data were incomplete due to the war condition (Table 1 ). Fig. 3. Seasonal occurrence of the urban form of cutaneous leishmaniosis (CL) in the province of Balkh between 1990 and 1994
