SHORT COMMUNICATIONS Taenia saginata infestations in county Nógrád (Hungary) Sándor KlS Institute of State Public Health and Medical Officer Service, Department of Parasitology, H-3101 Salgótarján, Bem u. 7, Hungary Taeniid species (Cestoda, Taeniidae) parasitizing the human population have rarely been recovered in Hungary. Their especially long life cycle (5-10 years) and the economic losses arising from meat contamination increase their importance. The registered prevalence of taeniosis is betv ven 0.2 and 0.5 per thousand year by year, but the infestation rate is higher, about 1000 cases annually. Because of the sense of shame, the typical manifestation of taeniosis, i.e. the excretion of proglottids in the faeces is usually kept quiet. Cysticercosis of cattle populations is maintained by human dejecta, especially in the case of grazing livestock farming. On the other hand, cysticercosis has hardly been reported from pig populations, due to the closed keeping technology of that animal species. Due to the long life cycle of taeniids, the distribution patterns of cysticercosis and taeniosis cannot overlap. One cannot find higher Fig. 1. Distribution pattern of taeniosis numbers of positive cases despite the increased effectiveness of screening and laboratory experiments; however, the decrease of the cattle stock also may contribute to this fact. Positive cases have been reported on the basis of routine diagnostic experiments using a
