The shape of the hydatid cyst is in the most cases globular, sometimes protruberances of daughter cysts may also be observed. Size of cysts 5-50 mm in diameter. The wall of the cyst is tough, thick and yellowish-white in colour. The thin-walled inner bladder contains the brood capsules floating in the fluid which fills the cyst. Each of these brood capsules enclose 8-10 scolices. A collective name for the scolices and the brood capsules is hydatid sand (Figs. 24-26). The freely floating scolices are 0.15-0. 18 mm in size. Rostella, 0.075-0.080 mm in diameter with 31-41 hooks in twocircles, are easily recognizable on them. The sizes of these hooks form a continuous series, so no two clearly defined groups (large and small) are discerned. The large range from 0.027 to 0.031 mm in length, the smaller are 0.019-0.025 mm long. The shape of larval hooks does not fully correspond to that of the adult stage (Figs. 27-31). Echinococcus-like cysts from the lungs did not bear marks characteristic for the species. In forest inhabiting ruminants neither fertile Echinococcus cysts, nor cysts resembling bladderworms were found. Definitive host for E. granulosus is the dog. Echinococcosis is widespread, although occurs with decreasing extensity. None were observed in fox, so we are inclined to agree with MATOFF and JANTSCHEFF (1954), that this species does not parasite the fox. References ABULADZE, K. L. (1964): Osnovy cestodologii. IV.
