where they might'V have been treated either on foot or by motorized (tractor) dusting machines, it was still decided, owing to lack of time necessary for a proper organisation of the control activities, to await the emergence of the mosquito Imagos and then to apply imagocide measures (SZABÓ et ZOITAI, 1967).The omission of treating the breeding sites at the proper time and the undiscovered temporary habitats, mainly around Mohács, were the cause of the unexpected „mosquito plague" in 1965 • Significant mosquito breeding in the areas between the dams occurred only at some points of the Isle at Földvár, and there too merely in some places of the higher lying galery forest, covered with shallow waters, along the reach of the Danube at Solt. Strikingly high numbers of also mosquitos were collected in this area. The above experiences have refuted, at least as concerns the mosquitos of inundation areas, the old culicidological tenet: „Much water, many mosquitos, even more water, still more mosquitos". Our experiences gained in 1966 also supported our views. Owing to the unusually high waters, we had repeatedly covered the reach between Szob and Dunaföldvár in 1966. On the basis of our findings in 1965, as well as in cognizance of the ontogenetic requirements of mosquito species living in inundation areas, we could predict that significant numbers of mosquito imagos or larvae will be found only on the Isle at Földvár. We were duly justified. In other places, e.g. in the Szentendre Isle or the Csepel Island, only sporadic mosquito larvae were found, though the water situation appeared to be favourable for a fresh outbreak also in 1966. Our experiences have also validated Dr. F. MIHÁLYI* s contention who stated, on the basis of his experiences covering several decades, already in 1965, that „the water is too deep, the drift too much, and the duration of flood too long for any notable danger!" This is understandable, even biologically, since the eggs of the „inundation" mosquito species hatch only at a
