HOLLÓ, F.: The Possibilités of Ascaris Control in Large-Scale Pig Breeding In view of the extensive occurrence of, and the economic losses caused by A. suum of pigs in Hungary, the author surveys the therapeutic and non-therapeutic control possibilities in large-scale establishments. By decreasing subclinical infection, the aim is to increase stock productivity and to reduce environmental contamination with eggs. After a comparative evaluation of three anthelminthics (containing sodium fluoride, cadmium, and piperazine ) marketed in Hungary, the author points out the role of chemoprophylactic substances (hygromycine B, thiabendazole), given regularly in small doses, in the treatment of ascaridosis. The therapeutic programme, whatever the substance, should begin with the treatment of sows in farrow. The construction and operating requirements of modern,large-scale fattening pens and their hygienic management coincide with the approaches and aims of measures subserving the control of ascaridosis . The author emphasizes that equal importance should be assigned to therapeutic and hygienic measures and that they should be applied concurrently.
