in 1923. He went on ..a year's study trip to the United States in 1924, and, returning home, published a series of parasitological papers.He became full professor of the Department of General Zoo­logy and Parasitology in 1935. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences elected him Correspondent, and then Pull Member, in 1946 and 1952, respectively. He was awarded the Kossuth Prize in 1951, subse­quently being decorated with the Medal of Work, the Order of the Red Plag of Honour, and the Golden Medal of Work. As lecturer and university professor, Dr. KOTLÁN, with conscien­tiousness and diligence, applied his outstanding abilities to furthering veterinary education in Hungary. To his efforts can be attributed the creation, in the Veterinary College, of a modern parasitological training, on a par with world standards. During his teaching career he stimulated the minds of thousands of students to a keen appreciation of his own subject and inspired a high regard for the veterinary profession. The whole of vete­rinary science benefited by his 22 year period as editor-in-chief of „Állatorvosi Lapok"(Veterinary Journals), later „Magyar Állat­orvosok Lapja" (Journal of Hungarian Veterinarians), and by his launching and editing of „Acta Veterinaria Acad. Sei.Hung." until his death. On the^150th anniversary of the foundation of the Ve­terinary College of Budapest he published his book „The History of Veterinary Education in Hungary". In appreciation of his meri­torious lecturing and educational activities over many decades, the Alma Mater conferred on him the status of honorary professor. In addition to his excellent lecturing and educational work, Dr. S. KOTLÁN was a peerless, and thorough research worker, enriching his science with numerous valuable discoveries. His activity co­incided with the almost world-wide blossoming of parasitology ­the transition of a previously descriptive discipline into a bio­logical and clinical science in the wider sense of the word. It is to academician KOTLÁN' s eternal credit that in accordance with this general progress he developed, by persistent and organized efforts, parasitology, a field disparaged by many, into a modern science in Hungary and elevated it to a height justly deserved by its importance.
