SZÁM Ha a Csépán-könyvtár és -gyűjtemény, családi levéltár fennmarad, ma sokkal többet tudhatnánk felemelkedésük és hanyatlásuk történetéről, mint amit valójában tudunk. Summary PIROSKA PALLÓS Family Györgyfalvi Csépán in Somogy county in the 19th century Noble family Csépán was one of the founders of the village Jákó as well as the founder of the reformed church in Somogy county. Their archive got destroyed which made the family history research hard. The reformed family first lived in the village of Senyeháza in Vas county at the beginning of the 18th century, some of its members (teachers, vicars) moved later to Komárom and then to Somogy county where they certified their noble origin first in 1803. Two family members became an outstanding figure in the 19th century: lawyer and landowner István Csépán (1758-1830) and Antal Csépán (1808-1903) also a lawyer and landowner. They both held a leading position in the public administration (Antal Csépán had no children so had no succession). They played an important role by donating the reformed church both locally and regionally. The collection of books in István Csépán’s library (1802) shows that the family belonging to the intellectual cream of the society was an enthusiastic fan of the ideas of enlightement. In his youth, István Csépán was also a member of the Masonic lodge in Zalaegerszeg, he considered serving the community, social welfare, helping the poor a crucial task in all his life. After the death of his wife (1855) Antal Csépán devoted all his energy to help the economic, cultural and social development of Somogy county. Between 1872 and 1887 he played an important role in extending and modernising the hospital in Kaposvár. 401 =-
