A descendant of a reformed priest-family serving in the imperial-royal army at the times of the French wars Military career of Pál Batvai Komáromi Sülye The author is a historian-museologist, his special field of interest is military history. In a longterm research study he is doing research in the order of subaltern officers in the Habsburg Monarchy and its Hungarian connections at the times of Napoleon wars (1792-1815). His current study is a case study, in which he detects the life of Pál Komáromi Sülye the son of a reformed priest in the army using the Vienna military archive’s records (Kriegsarchiv) and the documents of the Transdanubian Reformed Diocese. The military career of Pál Komáromi Sülye in the third quarter of the 18th century was based on his noble descent, his tolerance to the protestants, his education and a good command of German language, He was born on the ist of August 1759 in Szemere, Győr county, he attended the lower classes of secondary school in Szentkirályszabadja, then he studied in the Líceum in Sopron for a short while. He found the military career attractive because several of his relatives had already served in the imperial-royal army by then. He started his career as a private in the 34th infantry regiment in 1775, he was ranked as officer in 1787, and he was a major when he retired. He died in Pápa in 1826. The study highlights the unreliability of the military records which the author was able to correct by using data of the birth register. » 172 «
