Summary JUDIT GERA Sándor Petőfi in the Netherland The Petőfi-image and the translation of his works by A. S. C. Wallis This study is part of the currently made Dutch-Flemish history of literature which shows the reception of Sándor Petőfi, one of the greatest poets of the 19th century, in the Netherland. Adélé Sophia Cordilia Opzoomer (1856-1925) a Dutch writer and painter (her pen name is A. S. C. Wallis) did a lot for making the Hungarian literature known in the Netherland. The drama The Tragedy of Man by Imre Madách translated by her was published in 1887. She introduced the popular Hungarian poets of the 19th century - Sándor Petőfi, Mihály Tompa and Kálmán Tóth - in separate studies in the Dutch magazine called De Gids (The conductor) in 1889. She illustrated her analysis and notes by translation of their poems. The translation of the poems of Sándor Petőfi was published in a separate book in Haarlem in 1924, the introduction was written by her Hungarian husband dr. Géza Antal (1866-1934) a teacher of reformed theology from Pápa, a bishop of Dunántúl. Due to her study and translations, Petőfi is a wellknown poet by the Dutch scientists of literature. » 342 «
