Summary ZSOLT MEZEI Additional data to the history of the Pápa Hospital founded 250 years ago The history of the medical institutions of Pápa has not been scholarly written yet. As a result of the fact that many sources ruined during the 20th Century, research faces difficulties. In the old times medical treatment and charity were closely tied. The first institution came into being at the beginning of the 18th Century. The local Jewish community also launched a hospital for their own patients in 1748. In 1756 József Szentilonay, bishop of Esztergom, who had been bom in Pápa, started a home for the poor. In 1757 Count Ferenc Eszterházy, chancellor, formed a foundation using his own money and resettled in Pápa the brothers of mercy (Ordo Hospitalarius Sancti Joannis a Deo, Fatebenefratelli, Brothers of Saint John of God). The foundation was personally approved by Maria Theresa on May 2, 1757 and this was the starting point of a 250-year old development. The building of the hospital was designed by Jakab Fellner and it was built in 1762-1776. Between 1922-1936 it was reconstructed and ways of treatments were modernized. A historic period was put to an end when the communist regime confiscated the hospital and suppressed the orders. 286 Acta Papensia VII (2007) 3-4.
