Műhely Summary EMŰKE S. LACKOVITS Holy Communion in Kalotaszentkiráiy The Reformed (Calvinist) Church knows two sacraments - Holy Communion and Baptism - which provide a basis for the religious life of reformed people. The study, on the basis of researches carried out in Kalotaszentkiráiy, Transylvania at the beginning of 1980s, 1990s and 2000, describes what Holy Communion means in the lives of the residents. The first Holy Communion in the lives of the young villagers was preceeded by confirmation that was taken after the age of 16. Girls were allowed to wear párta (girl's headdress) after one year of confirmation. Holy Communion was served six times a year and before each occasion there was a one-week penitential period. The members of the community prepared for the Holy Communion through lenting and participating in penitential services. Both men and women were dressed up when taking Holy Communion. During the lenten period and on Good Friday it was suitable to appear in black. The distribution of Holy Communion was regulated by a strict order following age, sex, marital status. Elder men and women were followed by younger generations, married couples came before those engaged. The bread and wine left was eaten and drunk by the pastor and the lay leaders. There was a custom originating from the Middle Ages according to which the participants of the Holy Communion gave special offerings that was donated to the pastor. Participants took part in an afternoon thanksgiving service as well. 260 Acta Papensia VII (2007) 3-4.
