The Census of the Jewish communitiy of Pápa in 1803

The history of the Jewish community of Pápa is difficult to search since the archives of the community completely and that of the town partly fell into ruin. But the economic archives of the landlord of Pápa, the Esterházy family, the document of which is the census, is still available. The census relative to taxation registered 173 people. Widows and poor people were exempt from taxation but owners were levied 2, 3 and 8 Forints per capita. The Jewish people lived in the western district of the inner town, however, only 24 of them owned a house. Purchasing houses was restricted by the landlord. New employees came from Vienna and Western Hungary, which shows the tendency of their social and economic relations as well.

40 subinquilini (latin) = házatlan zsellérek. Nevüket folytatólagosan Írták, mindnyájan szegénynek számítottak, adót nem fizettek.
