There were 240.000 Jewish people registered in 1840. It was Count Ferenc Esterházy who gave a safe-conduct to the first Jewish family in Pápa on May 10, 1748. The community amounted to 2961 people according to the census taken in 1848. Based on this census and other sources, the essay gives an account of the local Jewish community of Pápa. The solidity of their situation is shown by the fact that in 1848 77,9% of them were born in Pápa and the rest of the Jewish residents came from the neighbouring villages. There were only 37 people coming from abroad. An average 5 people lived in a household. All the four categories of the Peter Laslett tipology could be found among the households, but most of them represented the type referred to as „a couple with children" (441). Jewish people played a decisive role in the economic life of the town: 280 tradesmen offered for sale their goods, 118 craftsmen with 95 apprentices represented 29 trades. Seven doctors and 23 pedagogues provided the community with a high level of civilization. 122 Acta Papensia VI (2006) 1-4.
