Unsuccessful abortion at the beginning of the 17th century

In 1600 a scandalous event happened in the village of Kajárpéc in the vicinity of Pápa in Győr County where people from Pápa also had vineyards. A baby was bom from the illegal liaison of a maiden (possibly the daughter of Miklós Mészáros of Kajár) and a young lad called Ferenc, in spite of the fact, that the young lovers also tried their hands on abortion. For this purpose, the pregnant maiden was drunk with the concoction of a „terribly bitter herb” — perhaps rose mallock (Alcea) — but it did not take effect. The affidavit of the witnesses threw some light on the circumstances of the event recorded on 12 April, 1612 in Pápa, disclosed here, and prove that the maiden's fiancée was not the father of the baby.
