Nagykőrös. The town was first mentioned in written form in one of the diplomas of Béla IV, írom 1266. It has consistently been called "market town" since the middle of the 15 th century. The town was the king's property until 1390, then it belonged to the queen; alter that several landlords shared the area ol the town. During the one and a half centuries of the Ottoman yoke due to the iree occupancy the population and area of the town significantly increased and the independence of the local governing body - the council and the chief justice - developed. After the occupation the town gradually commutated the squirish burdens; until 1848 it was a "privileged" market town, until 1872 a market town, between 1872 and 1929 a town with organised council, and between 1929 and 1950 a county town. Since 1950 the legal position of the town has not changed. The archives of the town are especially valuable from the age of feudalism: the series of the administrative records and of the court counsels from 1636, the statement books accurately showing the economy of the town remained from 1626, with negligible incompleteness. The documents of the disputes are available from the beginning of the 18 th century, and the series of censuses and statements prepared for various purposes can also be called abundant. The enfranchises handled separately and preserved in the Closed Archives, the original or copied documents of the disputes between the prefecture of the town and the landowners, and the collection of 173 pieces of Turkish and Hungarian documents from the age oi the occupation represent special value.
