From the history of Pest County
During and mainly at the end of World War II Pest County underwent a lot of serious damages. The long lasting siege of the capital increased the losses. At the beginning of 1945 the National Committee of Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun County was established. The Public Body handled the accomplishment land reform and took the organization of reconstruction under control. The Municipal Authority of Pest County was reshuffled on May 14, 1945 with 240 new members. The area of the county changed in the summer of 1945. Érd, Diósd, Tárnok, Sóskút, Pusztazámor and Százhalombatta settlements from Fejér County, and the Szob territory, Nógrádverőce and the Penc district notary from Nógrád County were attached to this county. Érsekcsanád, Nemesnádudvar, Sti kösd were attached to Bács-Kiskun County, while Boldog village to Heves County, and Tószeg, Ujszász and Zagyvarékas to Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County. There were 7 towns (Budafok, Csepel, Kispest, Pestszenterzsébet, Pestszentlőrinc, Rákospalota, Újpest) and 16 settlements (Albertfalva, Békásmegyer, Budatétény, Cinkota, Mátyásföld, Nagytétény, Pesthidegkút, Pestszentimre, Pestújhely, Rákoscsaba, Rákoshegy, Rákoskeresztúr, Rákosliget, Rákosszentmihály, Sashalom, Soroksár) annexed to the capital from the county since January 1, 1950. Local Councils were formed in the county in October 1950, and as a result of this the almost 500 years old parish judicial institutions ceased to exist. At that time the 181 villages and 4 towns of Pest County were organized into 11 Administrative Regions. They were mostly those participating in the 1956 Revolution who lived in the towns of the county nearby Budapest and worked in the capital. The intervention suppressed the revolution within a short time before its achievements could have been consolidated. The district committees ceased on January 1 st , 1971. Their roles were taken over by the newly formed district headquarters. Following the March 25 and April 8, 1990 parliamentary elections that resulted in the change of regime, the Pest County Local Government General Assembly was established on December 14 as the result of the municipal elections held in September. The population of Pest County currently lives in 14 small regions in 186 settlements, including 32 towns.
