" THE ACTIVITY OF THE CENTRE FOR LIBRARY SCIENCE AND METHODOLOGY Ш THE YEARS 1982-1983 In 1982 we worked on the realization of our plans under more adverse circumstances than usual. Following the résignation of the former director in the first quarter of the year, the activity of the Centre was managed by a commissioned director for half a year. After Ferenc Szenté had been nominated to the post of director, the reorganization of the institute was started in November according to the intentions of the 1979 supervisory inquiry of the Ministry of Education. Changes were aimed at a reasonable approach to the National Széchényi Library on the one hand, and at a more rational division of labour between the National Széchényi Library and its Centre for Library Science and Methodology on the other. In the course of 1982 we made some modifications in our plans of work with the approval of the Department of Libraries of the Ministry of Education, and some of our tasks were put off till 1983. However, some of them still remaineder unfinished, though our operatíve activity directed towards libraries had become more intensive, surpassing plans and expectations. Our reserves also became more obvious, which include the following: more effective forms of activity; a more reasonable internai division of labour; closer coopération with the leading authorities of libraries, primarily with the Department of Libraries of the Ministry of Education, with différent bodies of the National Library Council, with the National Library, and with other libraries with country-wide responsibilities. At the beginning of 1983 corrections were made in the goals, tasks, and organization of the Centre for Library Science and Methodology as the resuit of many internai discussions and external negotiations. The essentials of thèse changes may be summed up in two points: — many clérical tasks were handed over to the National Széchényi Library while retaining authority to make décisions. In practice, this means that the clérical duties involved in personnel management and international relations, as well as the administration of financial affaire are carried out by the proper departments of the National Széchényi Library, while the authority to make décisions in the Centre's affaire rests with its director; — two permanent posts of the Centre were given to the National Széchényi Library for developmental and research co-ordinating tasks. Thus, ail activities in the field of computerization and research management eeased in the Centre. Thèse two tasks are to be fulfilled by the National Széchényi Library in the future. Though the tasks and the profile of the Centre for Library Science and Methodology hâve become less complex, it has not lost of its significance, since the increasing of the authority to supervise ail the country's libraries enhances the rôle of the Centre for Library Science and Methodology considerably. 116
