THE ACTIVITY OF THE CENTRE FOR LIBRARY SCIENCE AND METHODOLOGY IN 1981 In the year 1981 we set two tasks of major importance ahead us: 1. increased professional support for the surveillance on behalf of the Library Branch of the Cultural Ministry and 2. intensive participation in preparing, organizing the 4th National Conference of Librarianship. So far as we could judge it, we succeded in both tasks as it might be perceivable in our detailed report. We have altered the system of planning and reporting for the period of 1981— 1986. The tasks and their accomplishments will be enumerated according to departments. The reason for this is that the structure in the Centre has so changed that each function can be separately attributed to an organizational unit. Notwithstanding these novelties interdepartmental co-operation is necessary to accomplish certain more complex tasks, e.g. by organizing smaller, ad hoc groups. Such groups were formed for supervising surveys, for organizing conferences and refresher courses, for professional counselling and consultations. (This is why smaller overlappings can occur in our report.) We should like to pick out the most important accomplishment of each department we consider characteristic of the year 1981. Department for Library Network Development: counselling and aiding for carrying out the library system designed in the basic laws and regulations. Department for Library Technology: consultative and operative contribution in modernizing library practice. Department for Reading Research: further development of surveys in the field of library sociology. Department for Holdings: developing the periodical Új Könyvek ("New Books"), an accessioning aid, as regards its structure as well as content. Educational Department : supporting training of librariansDepartment for Public Relations: construction of public relations with mass communication media. Information Department : publishing our periodicals as usual. 9* 131
