Development. Automation Among developing activities mention must be made of the elaboration of integrated processing methods in the library, the further development of automation, and the further utilization of Hungarian National Bibliography records (data basis on magnetic tape, introducing the exchange of tapes, central supply of catalogue cards, etc.). We have considered the problems of computerizing the union catalogue of foreign periodicals in Hungarian libraries, looking for ways by which international systems (ISDS) could be utilized. Partaking in the national and international information systems We have taken part in the preparatory activities of the national social science information system. Our part was also important in the International Scientific and Technological Information System of the COMECON countries on the operative as well as on the theoretical level. Our experts had their shares in the standardizing activities of this system and in bringing about the 3rd phase of ASRPI. In close connection with our ASRPI activities, we took part in ISDS (International Serials Data System) having its headquarters in Paris. We also participated in the activities of Interinformkultura, cultural and artistic information system of COMECON, in which our library is a national centre of coordination. International relations We have continued to be in close contact with the national libraries of the socialist countries. Committees of experts have been functioning in the following fields: (1) acquisition, (2) national bibliography, (3) interlibrary lending and union catalogues. The committee dealing with acquisition problems held its regular conference in the National Széchényi Library in Budapest. Its subject was: "Shaping the inland document basis of the national libraries and the problems of patriotica collection". In the framework of the joint scientific research, dr Zoltán Havasi, deputy directorgeneral has written a study entitled „The national library as a scientific research centre" for a collection to be edited under the title of "Tendencies and prospects of the development of the national libraries of socialist type" by the Moscow Lenin Library. We maintain expert exchange relation with 13 institutions of 6 socialist countries (except for Romania). In the frame of this exchange there is a possibility for numerous trips for exchange of working methods as well as for scientific research, especially patriotica research. This year 67 of our colleagues have visited socialist countries 15 of whom visited conferences. We have received 37 librarians from these countries for an average period of a week. 28 of our colleagues have visited Western countries, 11 of whom participated in scientific conferences. Of these, 7 spent a month or a longer time abroad. In Copenhagen in the Assembly of the IFLA, Peter Zircz, deputy director-general represented our library. We had close connections with the Paris ISDS Centre, Mrs Szilvássy has worked as Vice President of the ISDS Central Board. Besides the organizations mentioned above, we have contact with numerous others (AIBM, ISO, ISBN, SIBMAS, ICOM, IASA, IADA). For a long time much emphasis is laid on Hungarica reserch during visits abroad. This fact is reflected in the number of the days spent abroad : the proportion of time spent by Hungarica research was 16.1 per cent in 1974 while in the period between 1975 and 1979 this number reached 35 — 49 per cent. 5 OSZK Évkönyve 65
