A reform concerning the current bibliographical registration of articles published in periodicals was put to the agenda, as quantitative growth makes it almost impossible to comprise the whole amount of the articles in a single publication. According to our plans, this publication will comprise social sciences only. Books and articles published abroad in Hungarian and publications related to Hungary have been processed in two Hungarica bibliographies, Külföldi Magyar Nyelvű Kiadványok (Foreign Publications in Hungarian) and Hungarika Irodalmi Szemle (Hungarica Literary Review). Volume 2 of the annual press bibliography of 1976 registering periodicals of secondary importance was published this year. Together with volume 1 it contains the data of more than 3,000 periodicals. The outstanding event of our retrospective bibliographical activity was that Volume VII of the series Magyar Könyvészet 1921 — 1944 (Hungarian Bibliography 1921 — 1944) which comprises Hungarian literature, has been sent to press. At the same time the second volume of Régi Magyarországi Nyomtatványok (Old Hungarian Prints) comprising the period between 1601 and 1635 has been handed over to the publishers. Collecting data of Hungarian books published between 1712 and 1800 has continued, especially abroad. We have data about approximately 115,000 copies from the above period. New activities have been launched in the frame of our Hungarica program — one of the fundamental purposes of which is bibliographical registration — such as the registration of the works and authors before 1801, and a press bibliography. As a result of our special bibliographical activities, the first volume of A Magyar Irodalom és Irodalomtudomány Bibliográfiája (Bibliography of Hungarian Literature and Literary Science) has been finished and will be published early 1980; it contains the material of the year 1976. We have taken part in the international bibliographical programs and information systems (RISM, ISDS, ASRPI, IBHB) which we supply regularly with data. Readers' and Reference Service Our library was attended by 12,500 enrolled readers using approximately half a million library units 76,000 times. (The considerably high number of library units results from the fact that in the Department of Posters and Small Prints and that of MSS each print or hand-written letter is considered a library unit.) As the fulfilment of the readers' requests very often means the transportation of the holdings from remote stocks which may result in the damage of the copies, we are planning the limitation of our documents' and information services to a greater extent. These measures are to serve the purpose that those requests which can be fulfilled by other libraries should not be directed to the National Library. In this case the National Library could concentrate on its primary functions as well as on scientific research. Our Reference Service has given information mainly about Hungarian literature and history and compiled bibliographies at the readers' requests. Besides the readers, our library has been visited by about 1,000 visitors the half of whom came from abroad. The Library Museum at Zirc sponsored by our library was visited by 63,000 visitors. After two years the Library Museum at Gyöngyös has been opened to the public in its original but restored place, in the Franciscan monastery. Storing. Holding Protection. Reprography For a long time, storing is characterized by divided deposition, i.e. some parts of the holdings are placed in the new, still unfinished building and the rest in different other places. The upkeep of contact and the transportation absorb great energies in manpower as well as in equipment. In circumstances like this, more attention has to be paid to the security and protection of the holdings. Unfortunately, binding, conservation and restoration 63
