made efforts to fill in the existing gaps. In this respect the Regulations of the Sphere of Collection is under review. The delivery of deposit copies ensures that the printed production of the country will reach the Library. Foreign acquisitions other than Hungarica centred on reference works of a general nature and on basic works in history, literature, library and book history. The Department of Manuscripts increased its holdings with three mediaeval codices and with a large number of modern manuscript sources, mainly the literary legacies (papers) of outstanding Hungarian authors and scholars from the 19th and 20th centuries. From the new musical manuscripts an unknown autograph of Mozart stands out. Our collection of incunabula increased with two pieces. During this two-year period the holdings grew with 79.107 books, 9.509 volumes of periodical publications, 46.369 manuscripts and 138.629 other documents, all together with 273.614 library units. The presentation of the holdings. Catalogues The traditional way of the procession of modern books and periodicals is not free from the impact of modernization. New tasks, and especially the requierements of inter-library and international co-operation are responsible for the changes, for the additions. In 1976 we united the processing of books and periodicals in a common organizational framework, combining it with a number of reforms in the work-process. In the same year the recataloguing of the complete holdings of newspapers and periodicals was commenced, already in accordance with the new, unified international standards (ISBD/S). From 1976 the processing of books which appear in the national bibliography was performed parallelly: in the traditional way and on a data sheet suitable for use by a computer, in compliance with the standard ISBD/M. With the introduction of the ISBN system we have set up catalogues in the order of the ISBN and ISSN numbers respectively. The reconstruction of the older catalogues of the library continued. In 1977 the Library joined the shared cataloguing program of the Library of Congress. We are selecting and cataloguing the books, which are then sent to Washington D.C. by the Kultúra Foreign Trading Company. In the case of the special collections most of the work is taken up by the processing of the current acquisitions, but preparations are under way for the production of printed catalogues, which would make the material more accessible. The Department of Manuscripts is preparing the next volume of the catalogue of Latin codices, while the Department of Old Books is to publish a catalogue of its antique collection. bibliographical work The current periodic publications that make up the system of the Hungarian National Bibliography appeared regularly, but there were changes in their titles, structures and contents. These were necessitated partly by the approaching switch to a computer produced bibliography, and partly by the new regulations for distinction between monographs and periodical publications. The material dealt with by the current bibliographies registering foreign Hungarica was increased in scope. The computerization of the national bibliography based on the UNIMARC system is nearing completion. The first machineproduced bibliographies, still experimental, came out in 1977, and full automatization is to be achieved by 1978. The first beneficial effects of the new system will appear in the field of cumulations

: here the time-lag has become considerable and the yearly volumes of the National Bibliography for 1971 and 1972 appeared only in 1976 and 1977 respectively. The next volumes, as well as the cumulation for the period 1961 — 1970 are under preparation. The retrospective national bibliography for the period 1921 —1944 is in an advanced stage, the publication of the series (planned for ten volumes) is to start in 1980. The registration of the 18th century publications continued and the number of copies registered grew from 50,000 to 90,000. The second volume of the Old Hungarian Prints is also near completion. 5* 67
