Journals as well as yearbooks) ; and, from literary periodicals giving a general information to the public those containing exact bibliographical references. It should be noted, however, that the present investigation has special characteristics, namely, it is restricted in several respects : first, because the bulk of periodicals studied contained primarily Hungarian articles or articles of Hungarian concern; and, secondly, because references to articles published in Hungarian periodicals were excluded. The present analysis comprehends five years; the material collected comes from the 1960—1964 volumes of the 30 periodicals listed above. To collect this material 540 articles (of the 30 periodicals) giving bibliographical references to foreign periodicals had to be examined. In the 540 Hungarian articles registered by us the total number of citations to foreign periodicals was 1936. These 1936 citations referred to 686 different foreign periodical titles, for some of the periodicals were referred to several times. In order to analyse the material this sample of 1936 items had to be measured from different aspects: i.e. according to language, country and time distribution. 341
