nem tisztázottak, tekintve, hogy a szabadalom átvétele még nem fejeződött be. Lehetőséget teremtünk a gyakorlati munkával kapcsolatos, legfontosabb kémiai és fizikai vizsgálatok elvégzésére is. Ennek érdekében alapvető laboratóriumi felszerelést és néhány speciálisabb, papírvizsgálatra szolgáló műszert, berendezést szereztünk be (precíziós pH-mérőműszer, papír öregítésére alkalmas elektromos szárítószekrény, analitikai mérleg). A gyakorlat fogja megmutatni, melyek azok a további műszerek, papírvizsgálati eszközök, amelyek nélkülözhetetlenek a kémiailag megbízható alapokon nyugvó papírrestaurálás végzéséhez. Jelenlegi körülményeink arra alkalmasak, hogy kisebb méretekben kialakítsuk, illetve tökéletesítsük a hírlaprestaurálás és konzerválás lehetséges megoldásait, s ha ezek beváltak, talán lesz rá mód, hogy egy újabb műhely felszerelésével a mennyiségeket is növeljük. A személyi feltételek jók: öt-hat fiatal könyvkötő szakmunkás — akik a restaurálás alapjaiban is járatosak, szakirodalmat olvasnak — áll készen arra, hogy e szép kísérletet egy kémiaszakos vezetővel megvalósíthassa. Megjegyzés: A tanulmány az 1973. év végének körülményeit mutatja be. A cikk megjelene'séig feltehetőleg több kérdésben — főleg a gyakorlati munka területén — előrelépés és változás történik. Ezek alapját azonban az eddigiekben vázoltak képezik. Some Problems on the Restoration of Newspapers mainly as regards the Stock of the Hungarian National Library B. K AST ALY The papers used for printing the newspapers belong to the poorest ones in Hungary, too: they contain 75 — 80% of mechanical wcod-pulp. In the National Library — the only place where the 70% of the Hungarian newspapers can be found —the up-to-date and manysided activity comes into being in the recent years for the protection of the newspaper-stock. This activity must include all the possible means of both the preventing and the restoring protection; the good condition in the stores, using of microfilms instead of the original papers, binding of the old and new volumes in a good cover and the restoration-conservation regarding about one third of the stock. In the National Library —in the centre —the fulfilment of the national microfilming program began in 1969. This work —together with the preparing repairs

—has been in progress in new workshops since 1973. Here we have the most suitable circumstances and equipments. The newspapers are bound in an independent workshop established only for this purpose. The current newspapers are bound in the year of printing and the old ones are being bound continuously after microfilming, if it is possible. In our library 1974 is the experimental year of the restoration and conservation of newspapers. In order to develop the best methods of practical work we must take more standpoints into account. Papers being rapidly destroyed —as the holders of important texts —must be conservated and strengthened mainly by chemical processes. The number of the volumes that need such a protection — only in the National Library—is about 14,000, so we must have processes with a great productivity. Till this time little attention was paid to the real protection of the aged rotation papers all over the world, and there are also not many special articles either. The course of the restoration of newspapers and their conservation consists of the following smaller parts

: a) selecting the volumes to be restored and determining the necessary treatments» b) preparation for the restoration, c) disinfection and cleaning, d) bleaching, 142
