III. Az OSZK munkáiból - Bereczky László-Faragó Lászlóné: A feldolgozó munka időelemzése az OSZK Könyvfeldolgozó Osztályán - Time-and Workmeasurements in the Department of Cataloguing, National Széchényi Library. An analysis
Time- and Workmeasurements in the Department of Cataloguing, National Széchényi Library L. BEREGZKY-L. FARAGÓ In the year of 1967 the time consuming work of cataloguing and classification was investigated by the authors on the field of the newly acquired works. The aim of the analysis was to help the following procedures by breaking down the time and work consuming cataloguing operations to details of work: — the most effective development of division of labour — to establish the proper sequence of the work-elements — the most favorable grouping of the auxiliary tools of the cataloguing — the shaping of performance standards Measurable work units have been identified and defined, such as : descriptive cataloguing and its revision, classification and its revision. The work units were broken down by us in detailed elements. The data sheets and the methods of the analysis were planned. The course of the analysis: On the analytical data sheets the cataloguers noted the time requeirment of cataloguing a book by the defined elements of the workingprocess. (Constant elements). The course of work of the cataloguing of two books was daily minutely entered in a journal. On a separate sheet of analysis were taken the time requirements of tasks outside the spheres (Variable elements). The analytical sheets were monthly summarized in three aspects: — the personal schedule with each detail of work and the time requirement (personal work- and time-chart); — the book schedule with each detail of work and required time concerning the object (the document-processing graph). Based upon these documents in a totalized table we cotild demonstrate the following: The division of the required time of each cataloguer between the detailed elements of work in a certain process (descriptive cataloguing, classification.). What kind of work elements are needed in quantity and quality to catalogue a book. The relation between each of the elements of work in cataloguing. Conclusions The evaluation verified that it is impossible to prove about a performance standard whether it hides a loose or a stepped-up norm. The productivity depends on the actual working circumstances and demands. Only after breaking down a certain process in detailed elements becomes possible to establish the real contents of identically called, but totally different oparations. We ascertained which elements are the most timeconsuming and which could be taken out from the process of work to be performed elsewhere, and by else, more economically, and to what extent increases this intervention the productivity. Different impending factors could be made evident and exactly measured. The actual analytical work was insufficient for establishing the complex performance standards according to the different types of books. In general we were not able to find a relation between the types of books and the required time for the operation, but merely on account of the shortness of evaluation-time and the small quantity of observations. For our aims we ascertained the needed basic data. 315
