Ez a gondolat tovább élt hosszú éveken át. Hóman pl. a következőképpen fejtegette e gondolatot: ,,A végső, ideális megoldás természetesen a Múzeum, Egyetem és Akadémia könyvtárainak egy modern berendezésű központi épületben való helyrajzi egyesítése, vagyis az igazi Nemzeti Könyvtár megteremtése volna." TOMBOR The Library moved to the new building planned by Mihály Pollack in 1846. The arrangement of the bookstock, the establishment of reading facilities and staff workroom could be carried out slowlier than necessary. As a matter of fact only one big room could be furnished at that time. From the early sixties the library was being modernized, got new furniture and storing facilities. The lack of space meant, however, after a few decades an imminent and grave problem. At the turn of the century the demand for a new building emerged too, and several proposals were discussed. Before the World War I. the possibility arose to accomodate the library along the Danube, North of the building of the Parliaments. Cabinet crises and the World War I. prevented the fulfillment of the plan. After the World War I. the modernization became a problem to be solved immediately. Museum and archive units were removed from the building, thus the library gained wider space. István Nyireő made the plans of reconstruction, reorganization, equipment and new furniture for the libraray needs. The rearrangement was accomplished by 1928 and a new national library complying with contemporary demands opened its gates to the public. The first adjustable store-equipments of ironwork were built at that time, electricity was installed and civilized conditions were provided for the users of the library. The Nyireő-plans did not want to stop with these achievements, they intended to pave the way for the further development. By the removal of the collections of the Museum of Natural Sciences the building would have been occupied solely by the Historical Museum and the National Library. In the emptied rooms the Library could have extended aided by a wide-range, thourough and modern technical programme. This „ideal plan" could not come true. In the same period following the World War I. another proposal was put forward according to which a new monumental building should be constructed for the national library on the area behind Pollack's neo-classicist building. Nyireő elaborated the functional plans. The new building would have been constructed on an area of 20.000 sq. metres with a basic area of 9000 sqm. The library palace of 8 levels would have beenaa building of 280.000 cubic space with separated systems of readers service, staff workroom and storage, with the necessary mechanization, wide display facilitites and rich lecture halls.
