KRONSTEIN The card catalogue of the Union Catalogue of Books has increased yearly by 100 000 new titles which means an avarage 5% growth in comparison to the stock reported since 1945. This current acquisition of books has considerably modified the inner proportions of the holdings and truly reflects the policy in acquisition of the libraries. The study examines the changes in the proportions of the holdings analyzing the cards of the works published abroad in foreign languages after 1945. The holdings are examined according to multiple copies, to subject fields (social sciences, natural sciences, technical sciences, medical sciences, agricultural sciences, belles lettres), languages (German, English, Romance, Slavic and other languages), and two periods of time (1945—1961; 1961—1966). 1. The data reflect a slow but continuous and successive growth of the multiple copies of the books in every subject field ; 2. The proportion of multiple copies in the field of the natural and applied sciences is higher than in the field of social sciences ; 3. The importance of the Slavic languages and English has considerably increased but in different degree in the different subject fields. The changes are indicated in the enclosed tables. 329
