SOMKUTI In the course of time the collections containing 18th century's works in the Hungarian private libraries partly became dispersed partly amalgamated into the stock of great public libraries. The material included in these collections can be reconstructed only on the basis of the few contemporary hand-written catalogues remained to us. This study deals with two Hungarian 18th century's collections of great importance on the basis of their catalogues still in use. In 1802 Count Ferenc Széchényi (1754—1820) endowed his library consisting of Hungarian works and works relating to Hungary to the nation and by this gesture he laid the foundation of the national library of Hungary. In 1818 he added to tftishis collection of foreign works containing 9000 volumes. Count László Teleki's library (1764—1821) of 30.000 volumes was bestowed on the Association of Hungarian Scientists by his son, Count József Teleki in 1826, and this collection was the foundation of the today's library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Both founders of library were aristocrats of progressive ideas and of enlightened mind in the 18th century who played an important part in the life of this period's Hungarian society. By virtue of their travels in Western Europe and their foreign relations they were keenly interested in the academic and scientific achievements of the foreign countries and this fact is proved by the great number of books purchased abroad and which formed a part of their libraries. Examing the holdings of these libraries our study deals only with the 18th century's scientific literature published abroad and it tries to find out whether these collections included works representing the scientific level of that period. After short introduction to the history of science each field of learning is dealt with separately. The study enumerates both library's works discussing problems in the field of mathematics, astronomy, physics and enemies and in a summary the holdings of the library are evaluated and the shortcomings are -208
