the tragic influence and also the direction in which spectators have been driven by it. d) The final evolution and permanence of the tragic experience. Being a lasting and changing process, and not a momentary, flash-light phenomenon, people's tragic experience is to be checked several times in the course of its development. Only in this way may we analyze the three subsequent phases of its evolution, i. e. 1) the action of the immediate impact, 2) the emotional and intellectual working up of the experience, 3) the transformation of the experience into a symbol, which is its ultimate and permanent concentration. The author concludes by outlining further problems and perspectives of investigating tragic experience and literary impact in general. 182
