Papp, L.: Afrotropical species of the genus Diplochasma, subgenus Sauteromyia (Diptera: Lauxaniidae)

Description - Measurements in mm: body length 3.52 (holotype), 3.19-3.57 (paratypes); wing length 3.73 (holotype), 3.47-3.76 (paratypes); wing width: 1.42, 1.36-1.59. Colour: black spot between eye and antennái base trapezoidal (longest side on eye), as long as high, definitely not reaching lunule. Orbitalia greyish brown, almost filling frons. A narrow yellowish sagittal stripe present. A distinct roundish brown spot present below eyes. Antennae dirty yellow or light brownish yellow. Clypeus greyish yellow, dark brownish grey centrally. Apex of palpi dark grey. Mesonotum with broad acrostichal stripes, leaving a broad central yellowish brown stripe back to mid dc, which narrowed to a linear stripe behind. A brown pair of stripes along ventrally turned lateral margins of tergites, incl. edge of tergite 6. Abdomen otherwise yellow. Ocellar seta minute, 0.05 mm only, postocellars thicker, 0.20 mm. Short frontal setae sparse. First flagellomere 0.26 mm, with strongly narrowed, almost sharp apex. Arista white, aristal cilia 0.015-0.20 mm. Facial keel rather high but also rather broad between antennae and distinct down to ventral 1/3 of face. Facial keel stressed by the darker brown colour, too. Face along ptilinal suture down to first setae on cheek with a pair of darker brown stripes. Sagittal emargination of mouth edge ca. 0.16 mm wide. Anepisternum with 9-10 short setae. Presutural pair 0.12 mm. Wing clear yellowish, veins all yellow (Fig. 30). Stronger costal fringe distally to apex of R 2+3 consists of 7-8 setae. Distal section of vein M 1.19 mm, intra-crossvein section 1.06, ratio 1.188, dM-Cu 0.405 mm. Dorsal preapical seta of fore tibia 0.24 mm long, ventral spur of hind tibia 0.08 mm. Male genitalia (Figs 7-9) characterised by the large rounded ventro-caudal epandrial lobes. Epandrium somewhat broader than high (Fig. 7). Cerci normal with more setae than in patterned-winged species. Parameres not long, very broad basally and lie largely along the body axis, apex slightly bifid, that is not discernible in profile (Figs 8-9). Aedeagal apodeme with broadened round base (Fig. 9). Female postabdomen (Fig. 10) short. Epiproct with a pair of long setae, setosity of epiproct, cerci and hypoproct otherwise not long. Cerci only slightly longer than broad. Spermathecae (Fig. 11) globular, diameter of the unpaired one 0.075 mm, of the paired ones 0.06 mm. Discussion - D. (S.) clara sp. n. keys out to couplet 3 in the key above. Indeed, its closest relative is D. (S.) stuckenbergi sp. n., with the very broad orbital plates, short ocellar setae, cephalic and thoracic colour, etc. They form a species group within the subgenus. However, length of aristal cilia and details of the male genitalia make them easily separable. Etymology - The specific epithet refers to its clear wing. D. (S.) sp. nr clara (NMSA): N. Nigeria, Zaria, reedy stream, 10. iii. 1966, Lyle & Deeming (important parts of the body have been eaten by Anthrenus). This specimen represents another new species in all probability. The state of preservation of the single specimen is improper to base a description on it.
