(1997): Flowering plant types in the Hungarian Natural History Museum (BP) I. Lotus type specimens of József Újhelyi (1910-1979).-Annls hist.-nat. Mus. natn. hung. 89: 63-70. Abstract - The status of 103 type specimens of three Lotus species (L. horhasii, L. degenii, L. orphanidis) described by J. ÚJHELYI was studied and clarified. Some mistakes were eliminated and corrected (in the remarks). With 2 figures. INTRODUCTION Only a few type-catalogues of flowering plants have been prepared hitherto (KOVÁTS 1975, 1983, 1984, 1992) in the Department of Botany of Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest. Most of these papers deal with special groups of flowering plants like Gramineae and Boraginaceae, listing 142 type specimens. This paper is the first part of a series in which the author elaborates the type materials of major Hungarian taxonomists. JÓZSEF ÚJHELYI is one of the greatest Hungarian botanists of this century. His scientific view and methods are revolutionary in taxonomy in many respects. Although his papers on genus Sesleria, Koeleria, Lotus, Achillea have been published many years ago, in many cases he missed to designate the type specimens he had investigated. On the other hand he designated lecto- and isotypes mostly in a way, which needs correction. In the enumeration of the localities of Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy I followed the old county-system.
