ted from spruce-pine forest. This assemblage can not be autochtonous, but it did not drift a long way in the river considering the good condition of the cones and especially of the seeds. The seeds could have been carried from the catchment area. With respect to the extent of the two discussed species (see above) they could have come from the alpine region through the river Danube. The nearest locality is the Little Carpathian Mountains, but they are too far away for the seeds to float and drift from there. In my opinion these remains are very well preserved, so they came from near Szigetköz with the floods. This might be the case only if the climate had been boreal and the coniferous forests could have spread. By which I mean it could be only a glacial period of any stage of the Pleistocene. After absolute dating and analysing stratigraphical sequences we can say the exact epoch of the time. The development of this catchment area in Szigetköz has been described by PÉCSI (1975) and GÖCSEI (1977). The evolution of our locality can be described in the future based on core sequences. Having in mind the plant macrofossils of the sediment, I think this site could have been a short branch of the Danube, which could have become backwater, but at that time it had a connection with the river. From the lens-like accumulation of peat and clay we can infer Hoods: the growing river carried the trees from the forest region which was covered with water and this material was piled in the holes of deposition of the backwater. A more detailed palaeoecological investigation is needed to the reconstruction of the past. One cannot present exact results about the vegetation and the climate and cannot track the changes in the past as long as the chances of searching cores are not available. * * * Acknowledgements-I wish to say thanks to D. JÁNOSSY , E. KROLOPP and J. LÁSZLÓ who showed me the locality, to L. PONGRÁCZ for his help in collecting the material. And last but not least, thanks are due to Z. TÓTH for his splendid photos of the macrofossils. REFERENCES BIRKS, H. J. B. & BIRKS, H. H. (1980): Quaternary Palaeoecology. - Edward Arnold Publishers, London, 289 pp. GÖCSEI, I.
