Zanetti, A.: Contribution to the knowledge on Eastern Palaearctic Eusphalerum Kraatz with descriptions of new species (Coeloptera, Staphylinidae: Omaliinae)

Diagnosis - Eusphaierum similar to E. nigriventre (MOTSCHULSKY) in colour and in external characters, with head, pronotum and elytra yellowish, abdomen black (only males are known) and metasternum brown. Aedeagus similar to that of E. lapponicum with globular basal bulb. Measurements of holotype - Width of head 0.51 mm; length of head, from clypeus to neck: 0.31 mm; width of pronotum: 0.62 mm; length of pronotum: 0.44 mm; length of elytra, from shoulder to apex: 0.% mm; width of elytra: 0.85 mm; length from clypeus to apex of elytra: 1.7 mm; total length, with extended abdomen: 2.4 mm. Derivatio nominis - This species is dedicated to Dr. HEINRICH SCHÔNMANN, curator of Coleoptera of Naturhistorisches Museum, Vienna, who has kindly sent the specimens to me for study. Description of holotype - Head and pronotum yellowish, elytra yellowish, paler than pronotum, abdomen blackish, brown at apex, metasternum brown, legs and antennae yellowish. -Head transverse with moderately prominent eyes, infraorbital carina not much marked, temples short, without little stripes at internal margin of eyes; punctation fine, scarcely dense and irregular on not very bright ground, and with strong microsculpture that sometimes forms little longitudinal furrows; subantennal depression distinct, brighter than the rest of head; anteocellar pits very superficial; antennae not much elongate, 1st and 2nd segment ovoid, 3rd to 5th longer than wide, 6th to 7th subsquare, 8th to 10th feebly transverse, 11th feebly elongate. - Pronotum transverse (width/length ratio = 1.4), widest just in front of middle; fore margin a little shorter than hind, hind angles obtuse and rather rounded; surface convex with smooth median impression in fore third, and with a moderately strong and dense punctation, distance between punctures less than their diameter on average; microsculpture strong and engraved, surface rather dull; depression near hind angles wide and rather deep; pubescence very short, scarcely evident. -Elytra 2.1 times longer and 1.3 times wider than pronotum, truncated at apex as in Fig. 46, punctation a little stronger and clearly denser than on pronotum; pubescence very short, scarcely evident. - Abdomen rather bright, with superficial microsculpture and sparse hairs. -Legs without peculiar modification, fore and middle tibiae rather strong, middle ones a little curved at apex. - Aedeagus as in Figs 19-20; parameres strong with a number of hairs at apex, basal bulb globular, sides of median lobe convergent towards apex; internal sac with typical groups of spicules. Sexual dimorphism - Female unknown (see Remarks). Variability - Paratype with median groove on pronotum more evident than in holotype, pronotum widest at middle. Remarks - The complex of species E. lapponicum (MANNERHEIM), E. schoenmanni sp. n. and E. simillimum sp. n. is characterized by the shape of aedeagus with globular base. The species can be distinguished, besides the colour, only by the structure of internal sac of aedeagus. According to WATANABE (in litt.) " this species resembles E. yukiguni WATANABE in general appearance, but can be distiguished from the latter by the following details: head and pronotum more distinctly punctured respectively; median lobe of male genital organ nearly parallel-sided in basal hair. I have seen a female specimen labelled as follows: Wladiwostok Ost Asian Herman Freib / ex coll. Sheerpeltz / holotypus Anthobium friebi O. Scheerpeltz (NMW). This is an unpublished name; probably this specimen belongs to E. schoenmanni sp. n. Distribution - It is known only from the type locality, north of Wladiwostok. Phenology and ecology - Unknown. Eusphaierum simillimum sp. n. (Figs 23-24,47-48) Material examined - Holotype, male, labelled: Far East, N. Maritime Prov., Bolshaya Svetlovodnaya River, 40 km from mouth, 26.VIII.1976, V. ZSHERIKHIN leg. (MM); 2 paratypes, males, idem (RYV, Z); 1 paratype, male, idem, 7.VIII.1976 (RYV); 3 specimens, females, idem, 28.VII.1986 (RYV, Z);
