Barbacka, M.: New data about Liassic fossil plants in the Mecsek Mountains (South Hungary)

The cuticle is rather thick. The upper surface is thicker than the lower one. Cells polygonal, with strongly cutinised, sinusoid walls. Papillae and hairs absent. On the lower surface cell walls are less sinusoid, rather undulated. Stomata large (the thickened part of subsidiary cells about 40 jjjn long), typical for Bennetitalean (Harris 1932a, p. 101). This specimen resembles Anomozamites minor described by other authors (see list of synonyms). The unusually narrow pinnae are similar to A. nitida, but such narrow segments are found in JOHANSSON'S description (1922) and fit within limits presented by HARRIS (1932b). The cuticle is badly preserved, so only very small pieces are available for preparation and examination. It was not possible to follow the stomata's location, because only four of them occur on the preparation. The other marks suggest that it belongs to A. minor. Occurrence: Greenland,Sweden. Coniferales Cheirolepis münsteri (SCHENK) SCHIMPER, 1869 (Figs 6-8, Plate II: 2,4) 1867. Brachyphyllum Münsteri SCHENK, p. 187, Pl. XLIII, figs 1-12. 1914. Cheirolepis münsteri SCHENK, GOTHAN (cum syn), p. 64, PI. 60, figs 5, 6, PI. 31/32, fig. 5, PI. 39, fig. 3. 1928. Cheirolepis münsteri SCHENK, MAKAREWICZÓWNA, p. 29, Pl. III (XII), fig. 9. M a t e r i a 1 : BP 89. 30.1. Locality: Komló, Béta shaft, dump. Description: Several small branches of Cheirolepis münsteri were found in the Komló material. The branch fragments are simple or divided. The axis is covered spirally by dense, sitting, small, scale-like leaves. The leaf base is semiaplexicaul, the free part of lamina 4-7 mm long, and 2-2.5 mm broad. Margins entire, apex acute, slightly curved towards axis, or sometimes obtuse. The cuticle is very thick, the same on lower and upper surface. Cells rectangular, over veins elongate. Numerous stomata occur only in rows between the veins. The guard cells sunken, surrounded by 4-6 small subsidiary cells. The sides of the pit over the stoma is heavily cutinised. The guard cells often not preserved, or only membrane projecting in the stomatal pit. Stomata occurring on both surfaces of the cuticle. In SCHENK'S description it is different, since in his opinion the stomata is presented only on the lower surface. This problem was discussed by GOTHAN (1914), who noticed stomata on both cuticles and by MAKAREWICZÓWNA (1928), who agreed with SCHENK'S description. This problem was not solved at that time, so those specimens are recognised to be Cheirolepis münsteri. Since the Komló displayed no other differences, I classified it to this species. Special thanks are due to Mr. MIKLÓS GÁL for presenting the above-described specimens to the Hungarian Natural History Museum.
