Hystrix cristata LINNAEUS, 1758 Specimens : Langano (1 sex?, SK), "Abyssinia" (2 sex?, .S), Awash National Park (quills found in lava bubble caves). Notes : The two old specimens presented by M. GAJDÁCS have no definite localities. H. cristata is apparently not uncommon on the rock ledges above Lake Langano for. besides the skeleton of a dead animal, many shed quills were found in crevices and cavelets all over the place. Sight records (DR. G. DEMETER): Modjo. CARNIVORA Poecilictis Iybica (HEMPRICH & EHRENBFRG, 1833) Specimen : "Abyssinia" (1 çf, M +S). Notes : This specimen was obtained indirectly via the Budapest Zoo in 1871. Knowing the species' distribution in Ethiopia (YALDEN & al., 1980), it must have been obtained in the northern parts of the country. Mellivora capensis (SCHREBER, 1776) Specimen : Addis Ababa (1 sex?, S +S). Notes : This species is distributed over a wide range of altitudes. Aonyx capensis (SCHTNZ, 1821) Specimen : Bulbula river* (1 sex?, S +S). Notes : This specimen is remarkable for two reasons. Firstly, by far this is the most southernly record of the species in Ethiopia (YALDEN & al., 1980), so in fact it may eventually turn out that the Ethiopian population is not as much isolated from the one in Kenya, as suggested by YALDEN & al., Secondly, the specimen is a full-grown flavistic animal, so it is surprising that it should have escaped persecution to such an age when skins have always been much in demand. Collected by GAJDÁCS in 1955. Lutra maculicollis LICHTENSTEIN, 1835 Specimens : Gojjam province (1 $ , S.), Lake Tana (1 sex? S.). Notes : The localities fall well within the range of this species in Ethiopia. Lycaon pictus (TEMMINCK, 1820) Specimens : Adola* (1 sex?, .S), Sabober Plain, Awash National Park* (1 sex?, .S). Notes : The skull from Awash was found on the floor of a lava bubble cave and it appears to be the first record of this species for that region. BOLTON (1973) noted the rarity of Hunting-dogs in Ethiopia. Otocyon megalotis (DESMAREST, 1822) Specimens : Sabober Plain, Awash National Park (1 incomplete + 1 complete, sex?, .S). Notes : The skulls were found on the floor of a lava bubble cave. Bat-eared Foxes are fairly common in the Awash National Park (YALDEN & al., 1980). Sight record (A. D.): one road-kill between Welenchiti and Metahara. Canis simensis RÜPPELL, 1838 Specimens : Mt. Chilalo (1 çf, S.), Balé Mountains (1 sex?, .S). Notes: This is a species endemic to the Ethiopian plateaux. It is a fairly unique member of its genus (CLUTTON-BROCK & al., 1976).
