liploid rows. It is universally accepted what he published in connection with the lanceolate leaf of Poaceae (Gramineae) and the character of life form. Besides his scientific work he delivered numerous scientific lectures for the general public, popularized science and many times he was expert of educational films. Since he was very critical and sceptical concerning his own researches he has but a small number of publications, he weighed everything in his mind many times before writing it down. On the other hand, ÚJHELYI was a very good and delightful lecturer and raconteur, with great enthusiasm and an extraordinary range of interest and knowledge and freshness of approach, so we, his disciples learned from him an up-todate aspect of botanical problems besides of honesty and humanity. He never published his evolutionary theory, it will for ever remain in our, his friends and colleagues mind. His devoted wife was ILONA IRÁNYI, a grammar-school teacher, one of his former pupils, whom he married in 1943. They had a daughter, ILONA ÚJHELYI who is today a microbiologist. In the 1970s he became a grandfather with two grandchildren. He was very glad to be in his family circle, he liked and clung to his family very much. ÚJHELYI retired in 1977, after 44 years of strenuous service of botany, but it did not lessen his botanical activities. He continued to visit and work in the herbarium daily, discussing his theories and results of his investigations with members of the staff. In the Museum he will long be remembered, and our institute is poorer now without his constant stimulus and friendly constructive criticism, and despite a full and busy life, always delighted to assist and advise the younger generation. He was usually known as Uncle Joseph to many of his friends and colleagues. The writer of this obituary had a close, personal and honouring friendship with him extending over 10 years, during which he was a source of considerable encouragement and kindly help.
