Lieftinck, M. A.: Bees of the genus Amegilla Friese from Korea with a new species (Hymenoptera, Anthophoridae)

In 19551 have compared Chinese A. florea with the type in the British Museum (Nat. Hist.) and found them well agreeing with the latter. Anthophora tsushimensis (CKLL.) is a new synonym. The face-marks and the internal structures of the type are shown in Figs. 1—4. Amegilla (Amegilla) confusa F. SIMTH (Figs. 5—10) Anthophora confusa SMITH, 1854, Cat. Hym. Brit. Mus., 2:337 ( 9 India); COCKERELL, 1911, Proc. U.S. Nat. Mus., 40:260 (Himalaya, note); STRAND, 1913, Suppl. Ent., 2: 51 (9 Kagoshima, Japan, compar. notes with A. florea SMITH). N. B. — All other records of A . confusa. in the literature (a. o. FRIESE, from New Guinea) apply to species belonging to the subgenus Zonamegilla, which differ considerably from the present one in their structure. Material. — North Korea, Prov. A very interesting discovery. Though one of the earliest described members of ,,Anthophora" , this Himalayan species has thus far remained insufficiently understood. DOURS (1869), who had not seen it himself, merely gives a Latin diagnosis provided by SICHEL, probably a translation of the original description. COCKERELL (1911) records a female from the Himalaya in the Berlin Museum, stating only that the white abdominal bands are narrower than in the African A. niveata FRIESE, which is not very helpful either. STRAND (1913) gives a good characterization of a female in SAUTER'S collection from Kagoshima (Japan), noting its differences from A. florea and A. quadrifasciata, the specimen probably being correctly identified. The species is not included in POPOV'S (1950) list of Amegilla. Superficially, A. confusa is somewhat similar to the above species and also resembles other grey-banded members of the subgenus, like A. luzonica (CKLL.) and A. sumatrana LIEFT. Briefly, the two sexes can be defined as follows. rf. Integument deep black. Labrum subrectangular, broader than long, creamy white, like all pale face-marks (Fig. 5) ; labrum and clypeus reticulate-punctate, distal half of clypeus with feeble median ridge. Antenna black or almost so, anterior face of scape cream; joint 3 a little shorter than scape and also shorter than 4+5, joint 4 shortest and almost square. Head above, as well as thorax and abdomen, closely punctate. Pubescence: short hair on labrum silvery, raised bristles on clypeal parts grey-brown, long pubescence covering summit of head a mixture of pale yellow and grey-brown, becoming almost white ventrally; dorsum
