Lieftinck, M. A.: Bees of the genus Amegilla Friese from Korea with a new species (Hymenoptera, Anthophoridae)

Palaearetic or Oriental Amegilla showing any resemblance to A. confusa in this respect. The above descriptions and drawings of the Korean pair apply equally well to specimens from the Himalayan region, Nepal and the southern provinces of India, listed above. These average a little smaller in size than the two Korean individuals, the body measuring 11—12 mm (rf) and 13—14.5 mm (Ç ) in length, quite independent from the region or locality where found. In perfectly fresh examples of either sex, which are before me from Nepal as well as from Madras State in South India, the colour of the pubescence on vertex and thoracic dorsum is of a deeper tint than usual, rather fawn-coloured to hazel, the basal abdominal bands being at the same time definitely greyish orange. Nearly all males have pale hairs on the outer faces of the hind basitarsi, whereas in the female these hairs are predominantly black, only the dorso-basal tuft remaining white to a variable extent. The light clypeal marks of the female vary somewhat in shape: in some of them the median stripe is broader, more nearly parallel-sided, forming an inverted T-shaped spot, the arms of the T almost or fully joining the transverse lateral spots. The only (dissected) male from southern India is remarkable in that the black clypeal marks are much enlarged, more nearly parallel and boot-shaped, separated from each other by a distance equal to their own diameter. Characters of the subgenus. Size rather small. Integument brownish black to deep black. çf. Labrum subrectangular, distinctly broader than long, anterior border evenly convex and very slightly upturned ; surface almost flat, slightly shining, superficially reticulate-punctate, pale creamy yellow, almost white, with a black basal line including the basal tubercles, the anterior border also finely black; pubescence short, semi-erect, light golden. Mandibles cream, basal tubercles and apical portions blackish brown. Clypeus superficially, not very densely punctate, surface dull, except sides of paraclypeal area along inner orbits, which are more shining and almost impunctate; erect bristles brownish black; black marks at sides of clypeus (Fig. 11) invariably of small size, but frequently a little larger and extending slightly more forward than shown in the figure. Raised pubescence covering frons and vertex pale fulvous mixed with black, long hairs in middle of occipital area also darktipped, remaining pile above and behind eyes light fulvous changing to palest yellow on genal area anteriorly. Antenna almost black, the distal flagellar joints at most dark reddish brown anteriorly; scape about as long as 3+4, 3 subequal in length to 5, 4 small, broader than long, remaining flagellar joints about as long as joint 3.
