c. 1 cm longo pubescentibus, paniculis cylindricis subdensis cc. 4 cm longis et 1 cm latis spiculis bif loris c. 5 cm longis pallidis glumi undique molliter valde hirsutis glumellis longe acuminatis insuper hirsutis. Description of the leaf epiderm: On the abaxial and axial sides of the innovational leaves, the cells are medium large. Cell walls weakly sinuous, densely and pittedly incrassate. Senile leaves with 2 -4-seriate costal zone, parenchymatous cells densely alternating with cubic to oblong silica-bodies. Intercostal zone 6-8-seriate, comparatively short parenchymatous cells regularly alternating with minute and long micro-hairs, medially stomatal cells alternating in one or two rows with parenchymatous cells or micro-hairs, their walls decidedly sinuous, incrassately pitted. Juvenile blades with 2 -4-seriate costal zone, parenchymatous cells alternating with cubicoid or oblong silica-bodies, cells narrower than in senile leaves, extreme cell-rows also with some larger micro-hairs. Intercostal zone 4-6-seriate, by occasional absence of a vein also 10-seriate; parenchymatous cells alternating regularly with primordia of micro-hairs, with stomatal cells also appearing, similarly as in the senile leaves, occasionally among micro-hairs, measuring 40 p (Plate III, Fig. 3). The plant is definitely densely cespitose, reflecting strongly xerothermous conditions, intra vaginal, gracile in stature. In accordance with its habitat sites, its rhizome very short, not exceeding 1 cm. Also vetust vaginae very short, 0.5 cm long, whole, owing to glabrescence pale grey with a brownish hue. Plant 30 cm high. Senile leaves short, not longer than 1.8 cm, and only 1.5 mm wide, apically attenuating, marginally slightly convolute, densely and minutely pubescent, marginally ciliolate, apically scabriusculous, their vaginae 7 mm long, densely pubescent. Ligulae 0.5 mm long, bicarinate, marginally very minutely ciholate. Juvenile blades also not longer than 3 cm, narrow, 0.8 mm wide, convolute, together with senile leaves greyish-green, glabriusculous, marginally scabriusculous, their ligulae slightly longer than those of senile blades, 0.8 mm long, marginally crenate and very minutely ciliolate, obtuse. Culm foliose up to about half its length, 1 mm thick, even uppermost leaves not attaining 3 cm length, 1.6 mm wide, slightly convolute, apically acute, marginally puberulous, their vaginae 8 cm long, those of lowest ones densely pubescent. Ligulae short, only 0.3 mm long, bicarinate, ciholate. Panicle squat, cylindrical, 4 cm long, 1 cm thick, compact, inferiorly slightly interrupted, pubescent, pale yellowish. Glumae inequal in size, softly pubescent, lower one 4 em long, lanceolate, acute, upper one 5 mm long, ovate, aristulate. Lemmae 5.5 mm long, elongate, terminating in an attenuating aristule, paleae bicarinate, hyaline. Antherae 2.8 mm long. I know the plant only after a single specimen collected by BIERBACH on the Crni-Vrch (Scardus), once belonging to Albania, now in Yugoslavia. From DEGEN'S herbarium it was deposited in the Botanical Department, Hungarian Natural History Museum. This was also DOMLTST'S holotype, who retained a culm with panicle for his own herbarium. (The data are given above.) The variety, described in the Magyar Botanikai Lapok, 1904, and later discussed in detail in DOMIN'S Monograph appeared under the name Koeleria splendens var. albanica DOM. in the literatur, of the Balkan flora. For a long time I was at a loss what to do with the specimen. It could not belong to any series separated from DOMIN'S Koeleria splendens PRESL. One could hardly take Koeleria eriostachya PANC. into account, because, as an alpine — subalpine octoploid grade plant, it is more loosely and amply cespitose, and, above all, wàtti a violet-tinged panicle. When, however, I was studying the unidentified ma-
