Jánossy, D.: Middle Pliocene microvertebrate fauna from the Osztramos Loc. 1. (Northern Hungary)
lîaranomyinae KRETZOI, 1955 Baranomys (Warthamys) kowalskii progressus ssp. n. Derivatio nominis: „progressus" from the latin word, characterising the more advanced form. Stratum locusque typieus: Osztramos, locality 1. (further particulars see at the description of Amblycoptus topali). Age: Middle Pliocene (,,Postpannonian Pliocene"). Diagnosis : A primitive form of Baranomyinae, with the characteristic S-shaped (Spalax-lïke) lower M 3 , differing from the typical Baranomys kowalskii (separated as Warthamys by KRETZOI, 1969) by the transversally more elongated anterior and posterior lobes of this tooth. Holotype: Left lower M 3 . Inv. Nr. V. 71. 51. Description : The upper and lower tooth rows are represented by isolated teeth (two M 1 , one M 2 , anterior part of Mj and M 3 from loc. 1/b ; two M 2 and two M 3 from loc. 1/c; see Plate I..fig. 4-11). All teeth are typical for Baranomys s.l., M. 1 with an islet in the anterior loop (as in ,,population A" of Wçze, see SULIMSKI'S paper, 3 1964. p. 195). The variation of all other teeth, excepting the M — falls morphologically as well as metrically in the range of Baranomys, described and illustrated by SULIMSKI from Wçze. The measurements of the teeth are as follows: length (largest) width M 1 1.47 0.98 .\11.20 0.98 M 3 (adult) 1.12 0.93 M 3 (juv.) 1.01 0.93 M 2 1.26 1.05 M, 0.97 0.85 As follows from the measurements, the width of M 3 differs from that of the Wçze-form absolutely; this measurement is 0.93 in the Osztramos-form in contrast to that of 187 specimens of the latter one, in which it ranges between 0.70-0.90 mm. The measurements of the lower M 3 fall within the range of the Wçze-material, but there is a morphologically quite different structure observable. The whole shape of this tooth has the same S-like (Spalax-like) form as in the Podlesice-form (see KOWALSKI, 1956, REPENNING, 1968), but the outer side of the anterior loop fails to show such a straightly cut form as in all hitherto figured specimens of „Baranomys" kowalskii. The inner part of the anterior loop is much more elongated and retroflected than in the Podlesice-form, and the posterior loop is broader and also more elongated to the outer side, than at the latter one. As long as these features do not prove to be an individual variation I propose to separate it as a distinct subspecies. The stratigraphical significance of this form will be discussed below.
