branches hirsute. Spiculae mostly 4.5-5.5 (rarely 5.7) mm long, biflorous, glabrescent or weakly pilose. Glumae unequal, lower one 3.5 mm long, lanceolate, upper one 5.8 mm long, subovate. carinae subscabrous, lemmae 4.7 mm long, minutely hirsute, lanceolate, acute, palcae 4.5 mm long, bicarinate. hyaline. Anthera 2 mm long. Having described the plant in the Magyar Botanikai Lapok — when working u]) A. DEGEN'S herbarium in 1904-as a characteristic species inhabiting the sandy soils of East Europe, K. DOMIN drew it in three years later in his Monograph under W. RESSEB'S Koeleria grandis used as a nomen nudum. Owing to the longer panicular branches and the hirsute leaves, the treatises of the last century recorded it under the name Koeleria cristata PERS. (thought to be Koeleria mollis MANN, listed in general as Koeleria cristata L.). W. BESSER did in fact give only a name to this plant, therefore the name grandis remained a nomen nudum. There is in our collection an isotype of BESSER'S grandis, the same as of his Koeleria giga idea. DOMIN, who could not have had the idea of polyploidy, identified his well-described plant as var. gracilescens DOM. with Koeleria grandis (BESSER) em. et ampl. DOMIN. taken from BESSER. Koeleria polonica DOM. is in all probability a tetraploid grade plant (based on a collation of all its measurements with those of other tetraploid grade Koelerias). while the other taxon is an octoploid grade entity (ÚJHELYI. 1962). This plant, introduced by K. DOMIN in his Monograph (1907) as Koeleria grandis (BESSER) em. et ampl. DOMIN, was — blended with Koeleria polonica DOM. — listed by later floral works as Koeleria polonica DOM., owing to its very state of being a nomen nudum. By a steadfast adherence to the evolutionary standpoint this action cannot be accepted, hence I propose to introduce the plant as a new species, dedicated to its discoverer, as follows : 48. Koeleria besseri ÚJHELYI sp. n. Syn. : Koeleria grandis BESSER in herb. — Koeleria gigantea BESSER in herb. — Koeleria grandis (BESSER) em. et ampl.
