Smit, F. G. A. M.: The zoological results of Gy. Topál's collectings in South Argentina 4. Siphonaptera

A common flea, known from Peru (Pachacayo, Matucana, San Ignacio, Caylloma, Caccachara and Huacullani; ex Phyllotis amicus, P. arenarius, P. lutescens, P. boliviensis,[Chinchillula sahamae and Akodon pulcherrimus ) and from the neighbourhood of San Carlos de Bariloche (ex Akodon hirta modestior, Notiomys fossor, Oryzomys longicaudatus and Rattus sp.) Ctenoparia jordani S.MIT, 1955 From Oryzomys longicaudatus philippii: 1 3, 12—13. VI, 360 m.; 1 o, 12 —19. VIII, 380 m. ; from Akodon olivaceus brachiotis: 1 ?, 30. VIII, 300 m. : from Akodon olivaceus brachiotis or Akodon longipilis suf/usus: 1 <J, 14—-19. VI, 360 m. Hitherto this species was only known from San Pedro, 21 km W. X. W. of San Carlos de Bariloche, Rio Negro Territory, ex Oryzomys longicaudatus. Akodon hirta modestior, Akodon nucus, Akodon sp.. Xotiomys fossor and Raltus sp. Ctenoparia topali n. sp. (Figs. 1 —3) Tvpe material: Male holotvpe from the nest of an undetermined rodent, 10. VI, 700 m. Diagnosis: This new species is easily distinguished from (a) C. inopinata ROTHSCHILD, 1909 (of which still only the female is known) by the absence of a ctenidium ontergumll. the presence of one marginal spinelet near the dorsum of tergum II, by the stout and short setae along the posterior margin of the tibiae not forming a false comb, and the presence of two antesensilial setae instead of three; (b) C. jordani S.MIT, 1955, by the greater length of the palpi, the genal ctenidium consisting of eight spines instead of seven, a slightly reduced chaetotaxy and especially by the considerably less modified ninth segment, while the phallosome also shows marked differences. Description. Head: First anterior row on preantennal part of head with six setae, second preantennal row with two widely spaced fairly long setae and the third (ocular) row consists of two long setae, the upper of which is placed above the eye near the anterior margin of the antennal fossa. Genal ctenidium consisting of eight slightly curved slender spines. Eye vestigial. Maxillary palps reaching to about 2/3 the length of the fore coxa, laciniae and the five-segmented labial palps reaching to the apex of the fore coxa. Antennal fossa dorsally bordered by a row of 12 small setae. Occipital groove very shallow. In all other aspects the head resembles that of the male of C. jordani. Thorax: Pronotum with two rows of setae, the first row containing six setae each side, the second seven. Pronotal ctenidium consisting of 25 spines which are about 5/6 the length of the pronotum. Mesopleurum with 6—8 setae. Metepimeron with nine or ten irregularly placed setae. In other respects the thorax resembles that of C. jordani. Legs: Fore coxa setose over the whole of its outer surface, mid and hind coxa with a number of setae at and near the anterior margin; hind coxa without spiniform setae on its inner surface but with a patch of short setae near the basal anterior part of this surface. Posterior margin of fore tibia with six notches, containing 2, 2, 3, 3, 3 and 3 setae respectively: posterior margin of mid tibia with seven notches, containing 2, 2, 1, 2, 3, 3 and 3 setae; posterior margin of hind tibia with eight notches, containing 2, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1, 3 and 3 setae. Fifth segment of all tarsi with five pairs of lateral setae, none of which displaced
