Kol, E.: On the red snow of Finse (Norway)

ox the red snow of finse Trochiscia eryophila CHOD. var. rubra var. n. (figs. 14— 16. 23, 24) Sphaerical cells of 18—24—30 n diam., ornamented with 3 fx long spines. Cell-content brick red, containing much starch, no pyrenoid found, a great amount of oil, situated along cellular wall. Sphaerical cells covered with gelatinous sheath; adult cells with 3 fi thick sheath, first smooth, then with minute radial stripes; later thin, sharp spines developing on cell-wall, becoming incrassate and apically blunt (figs. 16, 23, 24). — It differs from the nominate form by its measurements, larger size, and the cell being red. This microorganism constituted about 50 per cent of the pink snow around Finse. Fungi Chionaster bicornis KOL (fig. 18) 4—5 p wide cells; hitherto unknown from the Norwegian snows. I first described IT from the snows of Alaska ( KOL, 1942), then it was found also in the snows of the Balkan and the Carpathians. Chionaster nivalis (BOHL.) WILLE The snow star is one of the frequentest cryobiont fungus of the Northern Hemisphere (Kol, 1944). Chytridium chlamydococcii A. BR. (fig. 1) I saw this parasitic microfungus several times on the Chlamydomonas cells occurring in the snow samples. Tne greatest number w*as found in sample No. 20. This microorganism is known since long, and was detected in almost every snow sample containing greater masses of Chlamydomonas nivalis. Table I.
