Topál, Gy.: The bats of a Lower Pleistocene site from Mt. Kövesvárad near Répáshuta, Hungary

144 gy. top ai. of M' 2,0—2,12 mm, width of M 1 3,08—3,24 mm, length of M 2 2,0—2,08 mm, width of M 2 2,88 mm, length of M 3 1,40; width of M 3 2,40 mm. Despite the rather considerable number of remains, one cannot sav anything definite about the systematic position of the Répáshuta Rhinolophus , and chiefly because of the fragmental material. It can be established that it differs in many points from the recent Rhinolophus ferrumequinum. showing, at the same time, some common characters with Rhinolophus macrorhinus described from Beremend in a previous paper ( TOPÁL , 9). However, it is also indubitable that it is not identical with this fossil species. I have compared my specimens with 37 R. ferrumequinum and the type of R. macrorhinus. The upper canines differ, from a lateral view, from all 37 recent ones, since the main axis of the crown subtends a more obtuse angle with that of the root than on the recent tooth. The cutting edge of the fossil teeth is evenly deeurrent, hardly bending towards the apex (fig. 1). but amply arcuate on the recent one. In this respect, the Beremend species takes an intermediate position. The fossil teeth are larger than the majority of the recent ones, but smaller than those of R. macrorhinus. The inner surface displays a longitudinally protruding rib, absent on the recent one, and also less expressed in R. macrorhinus. The canines are also larger in an apical wiew than the recent ones. The cingulum is not depressed (fig. 2) on their exterior eadual margins. The margin is straight, indeed, its rather convex shape would suggest that the small premolar of the fossil form had not as yet pressed the canine as hard as on the recent species. Despite all these differences, some recent teeth are similar to one of the fossil ones. ( X 6).—Fig. 4. R. cf. ferrumequinum, left lower toothrow, from above ( X 6).— Fig. 5—6. R. cf. ferrumequinum, left M 1 teeth ( X 9). — Fig. 7. R. cf. ferrumequinum, left M 3 ( X 9). Of the three M 1, two are wholly agreeing. In essentials, none of the recent ones are entirely identical with these two teeth, havig talons extending strongly inwards and backwards, being narrow, and straightly truncate on their inner margin (fig. 5). Of the teeth of the recent species, one only resembles them in having the inner margin of its talon rather straight. The talon of the third M 1
