Móczár, L.: The loess wall of Tihany and the nesting of Odynerus spiricornis Spin. (Hymenoptera, Eumenidae)

the head of a sawfly larve, some wrinkled skin, an almost whole sawfly larve with a 7 mm long, sucking wasp larve on top of it. The walls of the burrow were smooth. The nest was situated in the sedimentary, hard layer below the loess wall. The unfinished state of cell III. may probably be explained by the death of the wasp, otherwise it ought to have carried more sawfly larvae into it, sealing up also the cell. Though it is known of Bembex that it carries provisions during the development of its larvae, we lack any information up to date about the occurrence of this high state of caring for the breed in the family Eumenidae. The nest of Odynerus Nr. 15., opened on 21 July (fig. 8): Fig. 7—9. The inside of the nest opened on 17 July, Odynerus Nr. 15. and Odynerus Nr. 23. (Figures 7—9 are one-third smaller than natural size). At the base of a 52 mm long turret, the entrance was sealed up by all mm stopper. The burrow ran obliquely downwards for 42 mm. There was a gnawed-up mess in a yellow cocoon, and as I lifted it out, the cocoon broke to bits. Cell II. contained 7 sawfly larvae heads, a sawfly larve (sucked out to three-fourth of its content), and an Odynerus larve. This larva spinned a brownish cocoon on 30 July, shrinking into a dull-shining yellow larve, curved strongly and turned with its head towards its abdominal side. Cell III. contained 5 green sawfly larvae, and a halfway sucked-out sawfly larve with a 5,5 mm long wasp larve on it. This latter consumed the sawfly larvae till 30 July, it was moving lively and developed into a shining, taut-skinned larve (Plate V, fig. 17). On 14 October, its skin had a weak, silken shine, it was much less tight, pale yellow, nor did its head lean toward its abdominal side yet. — Aside of those mentioned above, there were yet cells : Cell A. contained the heads of 11 sawfly larvae and a fresh Odynerus larve ; Cell B. enclosed the heads of 5 sawfly larvae, 2 bits of sawfly larvae and the exuvial skins of 7 Anthrenus larvae. But there were ants moving
