Móczár, L.: The loess wall of Tihany and the nesting of Odynerus spiricornis Spin. (Hymenoptera, Eumenidae)

Apart from the single cells, the wasp seals by a mud stopper the entrance of the whole nest too, in the vicinity of the base of the turret. Should the turret get broken off or washed away by the rains, the nest remains closed, as I was able to observe it when opening a nest on 20 July. The sealing-up of the nest of Odynerus Nr. 4. (cf. p. 388.) on 21 July was also a stopper-construction work. The single cells are sealed up by 2—3 mm, rarely 10 mm, thick stoppers toward the passage or the next cell in front of them, while the whole nest is generally sealed by a thicker, 11 mm deep, stopper. The burrowing of fresh cells Odynerus Nr. 17. After having carried sawfly larvae on 21—22 July, the wasp began to construct a fresh cell. At 9 : 28 on 23 July, it was daubing the inside of the turret. At 9 : 48, coming from the direction of the Balaton, it entered the turret (fig. 5). When the first phase of the construction was finished, it watched me for 2'26" on the top of the turret, with only its abdomen pulsating. The wasp flew for water to the Balaton at 9 : 53, 10 : 44 (fig. 5). Fig. 5. Construction phases of the new cell of Odynerus Nr. 17., at 9 : 48—11 : 16. After the third phase of construction (10 : 44), the rim of the turret was even, the Sun was shining on it. The wasp flew away toward the Balaton after 10", at 10 : 50, returning in 2 / 50" First, it was hovering around the wall, later it kept cleaning itself somewhat lower down, then it flew off in a big arc, alighting on a blade of grass, to fly finally into the turret, after 5'5". During the fourth phase of construction (50' + 7'55"), it. broke off a bit of the turret, wherefore it discontinued its erection and began to past the turret from the inside. The points of time of phases 5—7. of construction were 11 : 00, 11 : 07, 11 : 16 (fig. 5). At II : 24, it flew away for water (the continuous observation was interrupted at that time). At 11 : 36, it was still active in its place, then it flew away again at 11 : 42. The freshly made part of the turret had desiccated in the meantime : there were hardly any Odynerus in sight in the hot sun. It returned only at 12 : 53, but it did not build the turret any further. It flew away at 13 : 00, returning in 1'15" and working in its nest. It appeared on the top of the turret at 13 : 33, turned back and retreated into it. Odynerus Nr. 21. This wasp erected a long turret in the corner of a broken-up nest in the middle of the wall, on 21 July. It was constantly visiting the nest for three days. It flew empty-handed into the nest at the following points of time: 14: 14, 19', 23', 32', "35', 36'30", 39', 40', 41', 43', 44'.
