rounded in anterior two thirds, slightly sinuate before the posterior angles, which are rather sharply rounded, the base rounded ; rather broadly impressed at sides, disc with a superficial longitudinal median furrow and on each side of this a very superficial elongate impression, close to each lateral margin with a fine, distinct, longitudinal ridge. Surface with a few fine punctures and no ground sculpture except, sometimes, for traces of a fine, longitudinally strigose sculpture in the lateral impressions. Elytra a little more than one and one half times as broad as the suturai length which is slightly longer than the pronotum, a little broader than the head, slightly widened apically, sides almost straight. Surface with superficial punctures which are distinctly coarser than those on the pronotum and arranged in rows separated by very indistinct ridges, the punctures in the rows separated by about their diameter, between the punctures without visible ground sculpture. Tergites of abdomen without visible punctures or ground sculpture, with a few strong setae at sides. Apical margin of the sternite of the eighth segment slightly emarginate and with a fringe of fine setae. Aedeagus as figs. 5. and 6. Length (largest specimen): 1,9 mm. Male (minor) — Head transverse, distinctly smaller than in male major, as broad as the pronotum, broadest across eyes, the post ocular region scarcely longer than the eye (seert from above), clypeus scarcely twice as broad as long, oblique sulci reduced to one with tra'ces of others. Pronotum less transverse, rather less than one and one half times as broad as long, sinuation in front of posterior angles less marked. Elytra distinctly broader than head, proportions as in male major but rather more widened apically. In all other respects, including sculpture, similar to male major. Length (smallest specimen): 1,7 mm. Female — Head transverse, a little narrower than the pronotum, broadest across the eyes which are rather more prominent than in male, the post ocular region about as long as the eye (seen from above), the front margin of the head (antennái tubercles and clypeus) more evenly rounded than in male, the clypeus about twice as broad as long. Sternite of the eighth abdominal segment rounded apically. In all other respects, including sculpture, similar to male minor. Length : 1,6—1,8 mm. Astrolabe Bay : Friedrich-Wilhelmshafen, 1901 (holotype [male major] allotype and 29 paratypes), Marega, 1901 (1 paratype), Stephansort, 1898 (8 paratypes), Erima, 1897 (1 paratype), Huon Golf: Simbang, 1899 (1 paratype). This insect is quite distinct from all described New Guinea Oxytelus species by the very sparse puncturation of the head and pronotum and the oblique sulci on the head. As in many other species of the genus, the male shows a great variation in the size and shape of the head and pronotum. The extremes of this variation, as represented in the available material, are given above under the designations male (major) and male (minor). Oxytelus (Anotylus) novae-guineae n. sp. (fig. 4) Shining. Yellowish brown, the pronotum lighter than the remainder of the body. Antennae light yellowish brown, scarcely darker apically. Mandibles, palpi and legs yellowish brown.
