A Preliminary Paper on the Results of Anthropological Examinations of Hair Samples from the Population of Ivád, Hungary By M. Deák, Budapest The staff of the Anthropological Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum led regular anthropological researches in Ivád, during the past years. The aim of the investigations were to establish the biological state of the isolât in partial endogamy, in its connections with natural, oeconomical, and sociological factors. As a member of the Department, I have taken part in the researches in Ivád, during the years 1950—1952. In June, 1952, 1 took hair samples of 303 individuals (81 children, 63 men, and 159 women) on which I conducted my examinations with regard to filament thickness. The determination of hair thickness was made by microscope, in Nr. 8 enlargement, with an ocular-micrometer, S с h e f f e l's method. The thickness of the hair was established in the case of every individual on 4 filaments, using their main as the base for further work. The results of the examinations were as follows : 1. The population of Ivád —99 men and 204 women — that is, 303 individuals, has a main hair thickness of 13,00 ± 0,16 mm/100. Standard deviation (ô) 2,849. — 2. Isolât »A« and »B« and the exogenous group show no differences concerning filament thickness. — 3. No difference in age can be shown by filament thickness. — 4. Nor can sexual differences be proven, in spite of the fact that no error originate from the introduction of a distinct selective group into the age, or sex groups. — 5. The filament thickness of the population of Ivád can be regarded as thick, compared to other data. — 6. I have examined 14 families of groups empricially aggregated, founded on filament thickness. The combinations of opposed and uniform parents with narrow, and narrow & average filament breadth did not yield offsprings to be qualified as having broad filaments. — 7. The proportion of hair thickness and pigment gave, according to the »Meansquare-contingency coefficients С = 0,827. The juxtaposition of theoretical and measured values shows a distinct correlation between the darkness and thickness of hair.
