Horváth, L.: The ornis of the Mecsek Mountains based on oecologic and oologic researches
a meadow called Pusztabánya in the Eastern Mecsek, 18. April, 1948. Its clutch consisted of five fresh eggs. 2. Luííula a. arborea L. Wood Lark. — I have not observed it myself. Agárdi found it in the Pécsvárad forest on a clearing, but he did not found it nesting. He does not give any date or a nearer definition of its locality. 3. Anthus t. triviális L.Tree-pipit— One should think this bird to be a frequent animal of th Mecsek with its very suitable environment, but in reality it is very rare here. I have never foune it nesting, and I have only one sure datum of its occurrence. One year (the exact date was losd I have heard its song and even saw the bird in a recent clearing of the Árpádtető, Middle Mecsekt) in the spring. The scarcity of this country-wide common bird is very striking, and the more so, as it is very frequent in the woody hills extending from the Mecsek to the Danube. Its nesting in the main Mountains are supported only by doubtful data. 4. Sylvia n. nisoria Bechst. Barred Warbler. —• It occurs only sporadically and in small numbers in the Mecsek. I found it nesting north of Pécsvárad in the Eastern Mecsek, 7. June, 1944 ; there was one fresh egg in the nest. I discovered it later with its nest of four clear eggs on the southern side of the Misina in the Pécsi Mecsek, 30. May, 1945 ; and I found a nest again with three fresh-eggs in a dense and young oak wood in the Western Mecsek, June, 1946. 5. Tardus pilaris L. Fieldfare. — I met with it in the Eastern Mecsek, 25. March, 1944 ; have ing observed seven specimens in the Püspökszentlászló clearing. 6. Prunella m. modularis L. Hedge Sparrow. — I met with it once on the'above clearing of Püspökszentlászló, 25. March, 1944. 7. Caprimulgus europaeus meridionalis Hart. Nightjar. — I found it nesting in the edge of a young and bushy, dense wood on the southern side of the Jakabhegy, Westren Mecsek, 30. June, 1936. Its clutch consisted of two fresh eggs. Habitat III. Young woods 1. Nucifraga c. caryocatactesh. Nutcracker. —J. Teodorovits, inspector, shot one specimen around Püspöknádasd in the Eastern Mecsek, 24. October, 1943. The bird was alone, flying from tree to tree in a young oak wood, around noon. I have stuffed it for the Natural History Museum of Comitat Baranya. 2. Garrulus g. ßlandarius L. Jay. — Not very frequent. T. Vándor collected a clutch of seven eggs, near Óbánya, in the Eastern Mecsek, 21. April, 1946; and he has found again a clutch of seven fresh eggs near Patacs in the Western Mecsek, 2. May, 1948. I mention these only as the authentic clutches came into my collection. I have myself seen a specimen around the Lapis refuge in the Pécsi Mecsek, 16. October, 1946. Later, I have observed two here, (19. Oct.). I found also only one specimen on the side of the Jakabhegy, Eastern Mecsek, 5. December, 1943 ; and have seen four birds in the same place 9. January, 1944. There was only one in the pine-wood under the Dömörkapu, Pécsi Mecsek, (17. January) ; and another under the Tubes, in the Pécsi Mecsek (25. Jan.). I have seen four specimens in the same place (2. February), and three another time (9. Febr.). Walking over the Misina I saw only two (11. Febr.), and only one 20. February. Then I found 2 specimens around Abaliget on the northern side of the Western Mecsek, 10. March ; and two other on the southern side of the Pécsi Mecsek, 19. March ; and one only on the southern side of the Western Mecsek, 20. March. Around the Lapis refuge there was also only one specimen, Pécsi Mecsek, 21. March. On the 23 rd of March I have walked on foot from Pécs to Óbánya : during my 32 kilometres walk cutting through the Pécsi, the Middle, and the Eastern Mecsek, I have observed twenty specimens, partly single birds, partly in smaller (but four together at.the most) flocks. During my other walk for a whole day in the northern part of the Eastern Mecsek I have seen ten specimens, 24. March. I want bàfk to Pécs from Óbánya with a northern detour on the 25. March : cutting through the whole Mecsek (with the exception of the Western Mecsek) I have observed only 15 specimens, single, and scattered. Then I could count eleven birds on the southern side of the Western Mecsek, 28. March.; with only one specimen in this territory, 9. April. It can be seen from above data that the distribution of the Jays is rather uniform from West to the East in the Mecsek, and that they are never frequent anywhere. During some of my walks lasting for a half day or sometimes for days I have never seen a single specimen. 3. Coccothraustes c. coccothraustes L. Hawfinch. — Comparing with other data of the country, this bird may be said to be rare in the Mecsek. It seems to like best those woody parts that border on orchards. In such places sometimes more than one pair nest, not far from each other. I have found it nesting first on the southern side of the Misina, Pécsi Mecsek, 19. May, 1945 : there were four fresh eggs in the nest, possibly originating from the second incubation. I have found four other nests in a circle of a few hundred yards in diameter in the same place, 28. April, 1946. The eggs were in an advanced state of incubation (7, 6, 6, 5). Then I have found
