at the upper side, and silvery white on the lower one. The skull is known only in fragments. Its known parts and set of teeth are identical entirely with the P. subterraneus. Measurements (measured on dried skin): Length of head and body: 88 millimeters. Length of tail 26 millimeters. Length of hind foot (moistened!) 14*2 mm. Length of ear 76 mm. Measurable dimensions of the skull : Length of the nasal bone 6 mm. Interorbital constriction 3'7 mm. Diastema 6*6 mm. Maxillary tooth-row 5*5 mm; mandibular tooth-row 5'5 mm. Remark: I sent the animals for comparison to 0. v. WETTSTEIN, assistant of the Vienna State Museum, who compared them not only with the P. subt. Kupelwieseri, but he was kind enough to compare also them with specimens of the P. subterraneus, P. multiplex and P. Savii wich he had in plenty. His informations in that question are as follows: ..It can not be compared with any of the species. The three latter ones differ in their colour from the P. Kupelwieseri in general, besides your specimen is considerably darker, so that the P. Kupelwieseri has a yellowish shade on the upper side compared with it, whilst your specimen is decidedly entirely dark brown, a colour as I never saw before in the case of species known by me." „I am convinced that your specimen represents a new species differing in colour from all the rest, I would wait however with their description until there is more material available." Since I guess, although I do not know, that the specimen comes from the High-Land under occupation, so that I cannot hope any further material, I am compelled to give the description. I gave the name Pitymys subterraneus Wettsteini to the subspecies in honour of my Vienna colleague OTTO V. WETTSTEIN, who made ist description possible with his comparison work. 3. Pitymys transsylvanicus ÉHIK. 1 We know hitherto only the type of The species from the Fogaras Mountain, from the neighbourhood of Lake Bulea, from an altitude of 2046 meters (about 6.100 feet). Its characteristic features are : The animal is small, hind foot about 13'5 mm, condylobasal length of skull 20 mm. The anterior part of the skull from the posterior border of interorbital constriction relatively short to the length of the braincase (8'5:11'7). The depth of the braincase, including auditory bullae, is very large. 1 For detailed description of the specimen see : ÉHIK : A new vole from Hungary and an interesting bat new to the Hungarian Fauna. (Annales Musei Nationalis Hungarici XXI, 1924. p. 159—162.)
