a hundred skulls in the collection of the Zool. Museum of the Moscow University, about 200 skulls and a great amount of skins of my personal collection and others of collections of diverse smaller Museums and private ones. The general number of craniological collections which I have studied amounts to 700 specimens and more than 500 skins. It would be premature to suppose, that my vast monographical work, a systematic summary of which is given here, represents something com­plete and finished. Such an opinion would be a wrong one. This is no more than a modest attempt to bring a certain light into the region of our science, where, according to the true expression of K. A. SATUNIN, „a complete chaos has been reigning until now". A systematic key of species of foxes living in Mvssia, A) General length of skull of about 170 mm (167*1 mm) ; length of under-jaw *) about 125 mm. Vulpes dolichocrania OGN. (Sidemi, Eastern Siberia). B) General length of skull about 160 mm, usually visibly smaller; length of under-jaw about 120 mm. a) Sizes small; length of body not more than 60 cm, of tail about 35 cm. Basal length of skull 84—104 mm ; zygomatic breadth 51—68 mm. The foxes are of a pale greyish and yellovish colouring. Outside of ears is of a grey-yellowish. a 1 ) General tint of fur is of a pale yellowish-whitish grey with a brownish ripple on the spine. Paws are free of any black design. Basal length of skull 96—104-5 mm ; zygomatic breadth 59—68 mm. V. Corsac LINN. (South of the region of the Don; Gvt. of Astrakhan, Kirgheez Steppes, Tourkestan, South of Trans-Baikalia). b 1 ) General tint of fur of a yellowish grey with a blackish admixture? without signs of brownish ripples and therefore of a more in ten sive grey than in the type of Corsac- Paws have sometimes a blackish design. Basal length of skull is only of about 80—84 mm; zygomatic breadth 60 (51) mm. V. Cana BLANF. (Transcaspia, Baloochistan, Aphganistan, North-Persia, mountainous Boucharia). b) Sizes considerably larger : lengih of body usually about 70—90 cm, of tail 40—60 cm. Basal length of skull 122-9—147-2; zygomatic breadth 70—85 mm. Subspecies prevail, of a reddish colouring, with hues of different intensiveness. In the regions of deserts and mountains one meets greyish types. Back parts of ears are black or of a blackish brown. V. vutyes with sub-species, diagnosis of which are given in the description of different types. *) From the processus angularis to anterior edge of the alveolus.
